Reiki for People and Dogs
What is Reiki?
“Reiki” is Japanese for ‘universal life energy’, and is also a work used to describe a system of natural healing. The Reiki tradition was founded by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 20th Century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication.
We live in a world of energy that nourishes and maintains all living things. When this energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us, we experience a sense of well-being.
There are many variations of Reiki, but in essence Reiki treatments can help the body emotionally or spiritually. It is a tradition that is open to any belief system.
Reiki treatment is a process that anyone can enjoy in the normal course of their life. Reiki can be used alongside other conventional or complementary treatment and often helps to provide emotional support during recovery.
The benefits seen in humans, are also seen with animals.
Animal Reiki practitioners use intention, focus and meditation to build an energetic bridge between animal and practitioner. Helen also uses communication methods in her work to assist with this.
When animals are stressed, ill or injured, their energy becomes “imbalanced”. The Reiki practitioner offers the animal’s body support to relax, self heal and “rebalance”. The main function of an animal Reiki session is to reduce stress, a cause of many health and behaviour problems, and allow the body to self heal.
The animals very much lead an energy session and may approach for several minutes at a time for their first session, may choose to absorb the energy from a distance or move closer and have a hands on session.
Reiki (and Advanced Energy Work) can be used for daily maintenance on a physical and emotional level, for assisting to reduce stress and induce a state of relaxation – especially beneficial for Rescue animals, help reduce aggression and behaviour problems, reduce pain and inflammation, help speed recovery when ill or after surgery and support the dying process.
Due to Reiki being used hands on or hands off, it is excellent to use with animals who have handling issues or aggression. It was working with a dog in Rescue in early 2010 which made Helen realise the amazing benefits of Reiki with aggression issues. In 4 weeks she was told that she had made more progress than any other behaviourist had in 4 years – just from using Reiki and then adding a “click to calm” programme.
Reiki is a therapy which is used increasingly in the NHS, especially in palliative care.
What will you learn on Reiki One?
Our Reiki courses have a large emphasis on Animal Reiki, although if you wish to only learn Reiki for People we are happy to do that for you.
In Reiki One you will be taught the history of Usui Reiki, how to use Reiki for healing yourself and others, including your pets, and how Reiki can be used in many every-day situations to promote change and improve the quality of your life.
Other areas covered are energetic anatomy, introduction to meditation, grounding, protecting, cleansing, creating sacred space, self-healing and basic health of people and animals.
You will receive 4 attunements at level one, two on day one and two on day two. If training over 4 evenings you will have one attunement per evening.
You will be given plenty of time to have practical, supervised, experience of giving Reiki to each other and to animals.
You are then asked to keep a diary of self practice over the first 21 days and write a reflection. A consolidation session will be held 3-4 weeks after your course and your certificate awarded.
Upon completion of First Degree Reiki training you will be awarded a certificate and unlimited post course support, including a Facebook support and development group.

After the subject of Reiki popping up in various areas of life over MANY years, I was lucky enough to meet Helen through our work with dogs.
We had a long conversation about LOTS of topics, and I felt a real connection with her. She has an amazing skill set as a dog trainer and holistic therapist. These areas of work are maybe not obviously connected, but I am convinced that we can enhance our scientific approach to animal training by a using an holistic approach.
I was keen to learn more, and when Helen invited me to attend her Reiki course, I couldn't resist.
The course was fascinating, and gave me a really good insight into the whole subject of Reiki ranging from the history, through some science to self practise and beginning to work with animals. The weekend was strangely relaxing for a course!
We were sent away with homework to develop what we learned during the weekend, and I am keen to attend the next course that Helen offers.
I would recommend it to anyone interested either in Reiki itself, or in self development, or in a new addition to your tool kit for working with animals. ~ Morag Moseley RVN DMS Cert SAN, MAPDT 00743
